Sharing illustration inspiration for kids young & old!

I have a soft spot for illustration duos. Always trying to figure out who did what or whether their styles blend together seamlessly. Peskimo does a great job of marrying their styles to create their own quirky universe of creatures (although I think one of them has a fondness for texture more than the other).

It’s always nice to see some amazing non-vector illustration so I’m loving the work of LA based illustrator Josie Portillo. Her tribute to Mary Blair’s concepts for Alice in Wonderland done in gouache are great and I love the way she uses light and shadows in her tribute to Harry Potter. Pick up your own print here.

Loving the work of Melanie Matthews, an Australian illustrator that has a ton of great work on Flickr. Her whimsical style is very much in the spirit of Mary Blair and so many other great mid century illustrators. I could stare at the texture in her drawings all day.

Meet the strange world of Ann Ruozhu Sun aka Sparrow Prince. Below is a collection of illustrations from her sketchbooks. I love the simple naive style and how there is always something a little off-kilter in each piece, the way kids movies in the 80′s were always a little unnerving to watch but you couldn’t quite figure out why. She also has a great sense of colour. Would love to see these come to life in a children’s book one day.

Check out this “Famous Robots” print by Romanian-born, New York-based, designer/illustrator Daniel Nyari! I like how he’s managed to treat them all in a consistent style. Nice nod to Robert Ball as well whom you should also check out.

“Popular Culture has given us a wide array of memorable characters that, over time have become distinctly iconic. This project highlights specifically those non human, non animal characters from TV, Video Games, Cinema, and Comics that give us every reason to feel nostalgic. Inspired by Robert Ball’s Goodies & Baddies Prints, I wanted to highlight robots whom I believed to be transcendental across the pop culture landscape including classic robots, modern robots and even some non-robots robots.”
